IN A POST-COVID WORLD, air quality has become synonymous with wellness. In addition to removing odors, steam and grease from the kitchen, range hoods are increasingly expected to deal with germs, allergens and other undesirable products of living and cooking in a space.

To maintain an upper hand in the war for wellness, ventilation systems now bring to bear smart features to more effectively deal with impurities in the air, automatically sensing heat and smoke or steam, all while delivering ease of cleaning and maintenance.

Of course, hoods and ventilation are also required to either serve style or subtlety – whether as an eye-catching focal point in the kitchen or discreetly integrated into the cabinetry or even the counter.

Hauslane's Chef Series UC-PS18 Under Cabinet Range Hood features six speed settings, a quiet blower that provides suction up to 860 CFM and a dual-motor configuration for heavy-duty cooking needs. The touch-control panel with digital display is designed to be easy to clean, and the hoods feature a three-way venting system.

The new and improved Big Chill ventilation line features an upgraded whisper-quiet, internal ventilation system, notes the firm. The three-speed fan delivers up to 600 CFM and features a delayed stop to ensure superior heat and smoke removal and optimize grease capture, the company continues. A fourth Power Boost speed is included, as well as a multi-stage grease capture system, dimmable LED lighting and push-button control.

Wolf's Cooktop Wall Hood Ventilation features a stainless professional look with a lower-profile ‘hidden’ ventilation, and matches the stainless-steel construction and hand-finished hemmed edges of all Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove products. It relies on a heat sentry that automatically turns on the blower or increases speed when exhaust temperatures exceed 200 degrees and minimizes the backward flow of cold air with backdraft transition.

Offered by Whirlpool, the 36″ Chimney Wall Mount Range Hood is a 400 CFM motor class hood that comes equipped with a 3-speed kitchen exhaust fan. The hood also includes a detachable grease filter for cleaning, LED range hood lights and a 65K BTU cooktop threshold.

Built to seamlessly pair with compatible Dacor cooking products through integrated SmartThings technology, the company's range of ventilation hoods include Auto-On Heat Sensors that activate and modulate the intensity of the four-speed fan based on heat and smoke production. The LED strip lighting, fan speed and timer can be controlled from a smart device.

The JennAir Black Floating Glass Electric Downdraft Cooktop offers a sleek cooking surface with four radiant elements that offer responsive performance, says the company. The cooktop features a ventilation system developed and refined by JennAir with three speeds, using proximity ventilation that helps capture smoke, steam and odors at the cooking surface, whisking them down and out.

Zephyr's Lift Downdraft is a space-efficient ventilation solution that rises to vent cooking fumes with the touch of a button. Featuring Tri-Capture Zones and Four-Way Ducting, Lift is designed with a minimal profile that allows it to discreetly hide behind the cooktop, range top or range. Once powered on, Lift elevates to an 18″ rise and when off retracts out of sight.

Signature Kitchen Suite's 36″ and 48″ range hoods offer users the ability to monitor and control air movement, operate the dual-level LED lights and turn the hood on and off via a mobile device using the Signature Kitchen Suite app. Combined with one of the company's ranges, the hood and range can communicate with each other, so burners and fans are synchronized.

The 36RH09 36″ Island Range Hood by EMPAVA provides noise-controlled kitchen ventilation through a 400 CFM airflow and 3-speed fan settings. Constructed of scratch-resistant stainless steel and sleek tempered glass with a handcrafted brushed satin finish, the hood is operated through a touch-screen control panel. Additional features include reusable, dishwasher-safe baffle filters and energy-efficient LED lighting mounted directly below the hood.

The Miele 30″ downdraft ventilation hood with optional external or internal blower offers a booster setting and a 15-minute automatic blower run-on. The hood can be vented or recirculating, and features dishwasher-safe grease filters concealed by a stainless-steel panel, as well as a disposable active charcoal filter.

The 24″ A-900 Modern Tubular Island Hood by ROBAM is constructed of handmade stainless steel that is hand polished for more than 48 hours. The exclusive engineered metal ducting system allows for the placement of one of the blowers in the toe kick for added storage beneath the cooktop. The dishwasher-safe, seven-layer composite filter is designed for easy removal.

Stanisci Design offers both standard and custom range hoods in 13 species of wood. Hoods can be purchased with the company's in-stock ventilation, and standard, stainless mesh, stainless baffle and stainless baffle base are immediately available. Available in outside vent or recirculating models, Northstar range hoods by Elmira Stove Works feature powerful but quiet multi-speed operation and easy-clean removable stainless steel baffle filters, notes the company. Color matched or complementary colored splashbacks can be added to visually tie together the range and hood.

The new Classic Range hoods from Fisher & Paykel – available across the Classic Category colors of Red, Black, White and Stainless Steel – debut in 30″ and 36″ models with three fan speeds.
